And yet, as of 2020, only a minority of Quebec businesses had completed a formal sustainable development effort.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p><p><em>Beyond theory and principles, there is the reality on the ground: many managers don\u2019t know how to implement environmentally responsible practices.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p><p><em>Dominique Cyr, an MBA in organizational social and environmental responsibility, is attached to CIRADD (Centre d\u2019initiation \u00e0 la recherche et d\u2019aide au d\u00e9veloppement durable), a sustainable development research and support organization. As a specialist in integrating sustainable development to the strategic functions of businesses, his role is to transform intention into action.<\/em><\/p><div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-sustainable-development-effort\">What is a sustainable development effort?<\/h5><p>First, let\u2019s get specific about what we are talking about. The World Commission on Environment and Development offers the following definition of sustainable development: it is \u201cdevelopment that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.\u201d<\/p><p>The notion of sustainable development is three-dimensional, and each dimension is fundamental to the equation:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>the environmental dimension<\/li>\n\n<li>the social dimension<\/li>\n\n<li>the economic dimension<\/li><\/ul><p>Dominique Cyr&nbsp;also points out that you need to know how to distinguish between a \u201csimple\u201d environmentally responsible management practice (which is already substantial) and a strategic effort, which is much more ambitious.&nbsp;<\/p><p>An <strong>environmentally responsible management practice <\/strong>responds to a one-time, specific social, environmental, or economic issue. This could include recycling, responsible energy management, or composting.&nbsp;<\/p><p>A <strong>strategic effort<\/strong> integrates sustainable development at every rung of a company\u2019s business model: the mission, values, products and services, production, etc., using a cross-functional approach. It is more global and responds to higher requirements. Additionally, the company must:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>put the commitment in writing<\/li>\n\n<li>report regularly on the progress of sustainable development efforts<\/li>\n\n<li>have at least one environmentally responsible practice in each of the three dimensions of sustainable development mentioned above<\/li><\/ul><p>In Quebec, barely 3.5% of organizations are officially engaged in a strategic sustainable development effort (compared with 80% that report at least one environmentally responsible management practice).<\/p><h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-embrace-sustainable-development\">Why embrace sustainable development?<\/h5><p>We can, of course, point to our moral&nbsp;duty: we are all aware of the climate emergency and the consequences of the things we do every day. But beyond the moral aspect, being environmentally responsible has many advantages for companies.<\/p><p>It has been shown that promoting sustainable development is a <strong>differentiator<\/strong> in the eyes of consumers. In a study by the Climate Action Lab, 86% of Quebecers surveyed responded affirmatively to the following statement: <em>\u201cIf I think a company is taking concrete, credible, and significant action for the climate, I am more likely to buy its products over those of another brand.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p><p>Climate is also a sensitive subject for <strong>candidates for recruitment<\/strong>. Young people in particular have real expectations of their future employer: they want the organization to respect clear principles of environmental responsibility.<\/p><h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-emergence-of-financial-aid\">The emergence of financial aid<\/h5><p>In recent years, many programs and organizations have emerged with the express purpose of helping companies start down the path of sustainable development.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Dominique Cyr points to <a href=\"https:\/\/investquebec.competivert.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Comp\u00e9tivert<\/a>, an Investissement Qu\u00e9bec initiative; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondsecoleader.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fonds \u00c9coleader<\/a>, sponsored by important sustainable development players in Quebec; and the program <a href=\"https:\/\/laruchequebec.com\/fr\/nouvelles\/article\/le-fonds-moins-cest-plus--moins-dempreinte-plus-dimpact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Moins c\u2019est plus<\/a>, a joint effort from La Ruche and Recyc-Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p><p>Mr. Cyr also points out that Evol, in its selection criteria for financial support, now favours businesses that promise to generate \u201cpositive social and environmental impacts aligned with the UN\u2019s sustainable development goals.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p><p>Clearly the assistance exists, and the advantages, too.<\/p><h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-models-to-draw-on\">Models to draw on<\/h5><p>Beyond money, there is know-how. Since sustainable development is a recent development for the vast majority of organizations, different models have been created to help businesses structure their approach.<\/p><p>Inspiration can be drawn from the UN and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">17 Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>, the approach proposed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnq21000.qc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BNQ&nbsp;21000<\/a>, or guides and tools from the MEI.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p><p>Dominique Cyr looks to the approach of the Network for Business Sustainability, the NBS, which acts as a bridge between research and business to advance sustainable development.&nbsp;<\/p><p>The NBS model has 3 phases, which correspond to maturity levels of organizations in sustainable development.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Phase 1: <strong>operational optimization<\/strong>, which focuses on environmental efficiency, which essentially involves doing the same things better.<\/li>\n\n<li>Phase 2: <strong>organizational transformation<\/strong>, which aims for the creation of new products, services, or business models that benefit people or the environment.<\/li>\n\n<li>Phase 3: the <strong>development of systems<\/strong> that generate social change \u2013 these are projects that by their very nature cannot be done alone. Circular economy initiatives are a good example.<\/li><\/ul><p>Sustainable development will endure: it is here to stay, thankfully for us and for generations to come.<\/p><p>According to an Ernst &amp; Young study cited by Dominique Cyr, 69% of Canadian consumers believe it is up to businesses to resolve issues related to sustainable development.<\/p><p>Whether or not you agree, clearly businesses can\u2019t shirk their obligations.
